The Immigration Services Agency of Japan is finalizing the design of JESTA, an electronic pre travel authorization for citizens of visa exempt countries.

The system is modeled after the US ESTA and Europe's upcoming ETIAS. Rollout is targeted for fiscal year 2028.

Travelers will still enter visa free once approved, but will need to submit personal details online in advance of every trip.
